PHOENIX –Arizona State men’s basketball left Stillwater winless, as Oklahoma State’s offense was too much for a shorthanded ASU in 86-73 loss. The Sun Devils, now losers of eight of their last 10 games, looked to get back into the win column and stop the bleeding during this recent stretch.

However, a one-game suspension to both senior guard Adam Miller for a flagrant foul against Kansas State and senior guard BJ Freeman for conduct detrimental to the team left ASU vulnerable. The Sun Devils shooting for the past nine games has already been a struggle, shooting 41.2% from the field with five games shooting under 39%. Sunday was no different, as the absence of their two best shooters, Miller and Freeman, led ASU to shoot 36.7% from the field.

This season, Oklahoma State struggles against defending the 3-point line, near the bottom in the opponent’s perimeter shooting percentage in the Big 12. The Cowboys’ past 11 games have the program 3-8 and haven’t won a game where their opponents shoot above 30% from beyond the arc.

A streak that continues as the Sun Devils shot 29% from 3 on 31 attempts in the defeat. Without their top two scorers, ASU relied on a monster first half from senior guard Alston Mason and freshman guard Joson Sanon in the second half.

The duo was dynamic with the ball and getting to the hoop and the charity stripe, combining for 13 free throw attempts. Mason broke his season high with 25 points, while Sanon’s 17 points was his highest point mark since December 3rd against San Diego.

Despite the Sun Devils’ effort, sophomore guard Jamyron Keller led a balanced Cowboys attack, with four players in double figures. Keller got the scoring going early with 11 first-half points, including 3-3 from the perimeter.

Oklahoma State grew to as large as a 19-point lead early in the second half, with ASU able to chip it down to single digits. However, Mason and Sanon couldn’t will their team to victory as the guard duo shot 6-21 from the 3-point line.
It doesn’t get any easier for ASU traveling past the red river to play No. 15 Texas Tech on Wednesday to try to break its recent rut.
